Steve's Blog Entry 10/19/2009 - The power of posture

The power of posture.

"The power of posture."

Have you ever heard the motivational phrase, "Act as if"? The basic premise is if you want to develop a trait such as increased self-confidence, simply behave as if you already had it. Change the way you physically carry yourself (how you walk, talk, etc.) and your attitude and psyche will follow suit, developing true self-confidence.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to improve your posture.

A recent study by researchers from Ohio State University shows how improving your posture can have such a positive effect on your life by increasing confidence in your own thoughts. According to the co-author of the study and professor of psychology Richard Petty, "Most of us were taught that sitting up straight gives a good impression to other people, but it turns out that our posture can also affect how we think about ourselves. If you sit up straight, you end up convincing yourself by the posture you're in."

In addition to the psychological benefits that you may experience, sitting or standing with improved posture is of course physically better for you. I encourage you to challenge yourself to be mindful of your posture throughout the day. Try it for a week and see if you don't feel more confident in yourself and your decisions..

Cheers!
