"Do you stop to smell the roses?"
A friend of mine sent me an amazing article about an experiment organized by the Washington Post. A violinist played in a busy Washington D.C. subway station for 45 minutes. No one knew this but the musician was Joshua Bell, a world-renowned violinist. He played some of the most complex pieces ever written, using an 18th century violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Not knowing who he was, how many people stopped to listen to him play?
Of the roughly one thousand people that passed him by, only six stopped to listen for a while. Most passersby were too caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life that they didn't even stop to appreciate the beauty before them. Many children seemed mesmerized, but were quickly pushed along by their hurried parents.
Would you have stopped? Beauty is everywhere in this world, but if you don't take the time to slow down and experience it, you may never find it. When we take the time to appreciate the little things in life, we gain perspective and find meaning in our lives, which leads to happiness.
I encourage all of you to use this story as a wake up call to slow down and take time to smell the roses!
