Music: An instant mood changer

Have you ever felt lousy, only to have a song come on the radio that completely snapped you out of your bad mood and made you smile? What about the opposite effect? Ever had a sad song bring you down and depress you?

To help you stay positive, it's important to choose your music carefully.

Sometimes we get stuck in a rut of worry and depression, and it seems to feel good to sing the blues. We often become drawn to sad songs about heartache, and play them over and over again. But this really doesn't do much to help snap us out of these nonproductive states and feel better about ourselves.

So I urge each of you to try an experiment. For one week, listen only to uplifting and energetic music. If a depressing song comes on the radio or your iPod, simply skip it and find something more positive to listen to.

You will probably find (as I have) that listening to the right kind of music can help you relax and put you into a much better mood. I encourage you to also do this in the morning as you start your day - put on a cheerful song that really resonates with you, one that makes you sing along with full emotion. This will help put you into a healthy positive state of mind as you head out to take on the world that day.

Cheers!
